Education

I have a Bachelor's degree in English studies from George Mason University and I am currently a Master's candidate, remotely finishing up my degree in Creative Writing at Longwood University. My thesis is scheduled to be defended November 19th and I am set to graduate in December. My cumulative GPA at Longwood is 3.5.

Experience

In my undergrad, I was a Writing Tutor at Northern Virginia Community College, where I consistently received Certificates of Excellence--awarded to tutors who have exemplary reports back from students. A lot of my work was with ESL students, but I was able to help any student in any major with needs regarding essay preparation, proofreading, and revision. A few students I tutored mentioned how helpful I was in comparison to the Writing Center. I can only assume the difference was that I love the work--absolutely love it--and I am willing to work as hard as possible with students to transform their rough essays into an A grade. Keep in mind, though, I never write for the students. I train fundamental writing skills, and suggest ways to point an essay in the right direction. I proofread rough drafts as if I am the teacher and mark them up as if the harshest grader possible--but as a guide, I am patient and incredibly easy to work with; I believe it's important to work with the student at their pace, rather than try to force anything. I say this, because I had to deal with a learning disability throughout my life, and I know first-hand that some teaching methods don't always click with everyone. My education dealt heavily with providing critical insight. Just a piece of free advice, anytime you are looking for a person to give harsh feedback on writing--completely unabashed critiques--ask a Creative Writing major. Never dismiss them as artsy, because they are taught to dissect EVERYTHING. Creative Writers learn the hard way that they aren't Faulkner or Hemingway, and every workshop is built to remind them of that. So, just keep that in mind when you see someone with a Creative Writing degree; these are writers with tough skin and they really know how to dish it out. Throughout college I had participated in sixteen writing workshops of different styles, taken several courses on literature, a few courses on business writing, and an independent study on teaching methodology. As far as my professional notables, I was a graduate assistant in the Creative Writing department at Longwood University. I also worked as the production editor in the literature journals The Dos Passos Review and Personae Magazine, where I selected and published works of Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Poetry. I also administrated two years of Longwood University's 0-60: Ten-Minute Play Festival, and I designed, produced, and published a book of poetry for the winner of the annual Liam Rector First Book Prize for Poetry.

Hobbies

I spend a lot of my free time surrounded by books. I love it all--Literary Fiction, Genre Fiction, Poetry, Memoir, Articles, Instructional, Self-Help--there is always something new to learn. I find other entertainment through movies, music, and keeping up with my sport: boxing. I am also a bit of a health nut, and would like to someday be a certified personal trainer. But I consider tutoring and proofreading a hobby as well, because I just love doing it. It is, by far, the most rewarding thing I've ever done. *For those interested, ask me about alternative services such as Skype lessons, and document markup via e-mail.
